Dayton S. Hawkins

Services for Dayton S. Hawkins, 94, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lawrence. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Everest.

Mr. Hawkins died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Eudora Nursing Center. He had been a resident of Lawrence since 1956.

He was born Aug. 8, 1907, in Axtell, the son of Hilary H. and Maude (Carney) Hawkins.

Mr. Hawkins farmed in Everest until 1954, when he moved to the state of Washington. He moved to Lawrence in December 1956 and worked as a sheet metal worker at Kansas University. He retired in March 1973.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was a member of the men’s Bible study group. He was a former member of First Methodist Church, Axtell, Zion Lutheran Church, Everest, and the Knife and Fork Club, Lawrence.

He married Almaira Atland on Dec. 25, 1940, in Everest. She died April 27, 1991.

Survivors include a brother, Hilary Hawkins, Marysville; and a sister, Lelia Campbell, St. Joseph, Mo.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church, sent in care of the mortuary.
