Jami Lutz, Lawrence, recently completed a three-day workshop on clinical assistance for women who breast-feed. The conference was sponsored by Stormont-Vail Health Care and Lactation Consultant Services.

She received certification as an educator of breast-feeding. Certification is an added credential that recognizes increased clinical competence in the field of breast-feeding assistance.

Lutz also recently attended a course sponsored by the Kansas Division for Early Childhood. The course featured the use of natural environments, community teams and music for beginning literacy skills. The keynote speaker addressed the topic “Permission to be Disabled.” Lutz also learned signs to look for when identifying abuse and neglect in children, along with information on adaptations for pre-walkers and low-vision children.

Lutz, who has been an occupational therapist with TherapyWorks for six years, received her bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from the Kansas University Medical Center. She specializes in pediatric therapy.

Larry Growney recently attended a course called the McConnell Patellofemoral Treatment Plan. The course featured skills and treatment strategies for patellar taping, including patellofemoral pain, patella tendonitis and osteoarthritis; as well as assessment and treatment techniques for knee pain.

Growney has been a physical therapist at TherapyWorks for two years. He received a doctorate in sports psychology and a degree in physical therapy from Kansas University. He specializes in orthopedic and sports medicine.

Lawrence Memorial Hospital recently named Nancy Knaggs as the data quality manager in the Health Information Management Services department. Knaggs supervises six employees who review patient records for accuracy. She also works with the Patient Accounts department to ensure proper medical coding of patient accounts. Knaggs is a registered health information technician and a certified coding specialist.

She comes to LMH with 17 years of health information management experience at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

Matthew Hoy has joined Stevens & Brand as an associate and will practice within the firm’s business and estate planning group. Hoy joins the firm after four years of private practice in Lawrence. Hoy is president of the Douglas County Estate Planning Council and previously chaired the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce Government Communications Committee. Hoy graduated from Kansas University’s School of Law and School of Business. He will continue to focus his practice in the business planning, estate planning, estate administration and real estate areas.

Gary Stevanus, of the Kansas Center for Athletic Medicine in Lawrence, attended the Mid-America Athletic Trainers Assn. conference March 15-17 in Omaha, Neb. Various educational programs were presented during the conference in addition to a business meeting relating to state and national legislative efforts. Stevanus is an athletic trainer for Baldwin Junior High School and Baldwin High School.

Teresa Ohlemeier of Lawrence Realty Associates Inc. has received a certification from the Graduate Realtor Institute. The certification requires 13 hours of classes pertaining to construction, environmental issues, representation of buyers and sellers, and analyzing investment properties.

Honors and awards

Ron King, an American Family Insurance agent in Lawrence, was District Agent of the Month for March. It is the second time he has received the honor this year. He has qualified for the company’s All American trip to Orlando, Fla., in June. The trip is based on all lines of insurance production.

Lawrence-based Callahan Creek’s Interactive Department received several awards at the Kansas City Omni Awards competition. The department won awards for the following Web sites that it created: www.prerog.com, www.callahancreek.com/interactive and www.mainlineholographics.com.

The department, which opened in January 2001, is led by John Kuefler, executive president, and Gary Piland, vice president and chief technology officer. The department offers a range of interactive services including Web site development, e-mail marketing, e-commerce, interactive business strategy, CD-ROMs for sales and training, online research and Internet advertising.

Marty Henderson, sales associate with RE/MAX Professionals in Lawrence, has received the following awards by the RE/MAX Mid-States Region during his first year at RE/MAX: Highest Single Commission; Highest First Commission; 100% Club, which represents at least $100,000 in commissions; and One Million Dollar Club, which represents at least $1 million in real estate sold.

Mary Kimmi, Atchison, was named Employee of the Year at Midwest Grain Products, Atchison. The award recognizes individuals for outstanding job performance, dedication and service and to help foster a productive and enjoyable work environment. She was selected by a committee of personnel. She began working for Midwest Grain Products in 1994. She worked in operator positions in the company’s distillery until l998 when she was promoted to primary processing operator.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 is seeking applications for Pollution Prevention Awards for environmental excellence from businesses in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska.

The awards honor businesses for environmental excellence in eliminating or reducing waste at the source. The goals are to eliminate or reduce waste generation, to conserve natural resources and materials, to reduce the use of hazardous materials, and to promote the use of more energy-efficient equipment.

The monthly meeting of the Twilight Chapter of the American Business Women’s Assn. will be at 7 p.m. April 15 at the American Legion Building, 3408 W. Sixth St. Networking activity will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The cost of dinner is $10.

Steve Woolf, of Mountain Man Extraordinaire, will provide entertainment for the club’s annual Business Associate Night. The club also will announce the “Woman of the Year.”

The International Trade Club of Greater Kansas City will celebrate World Trade Week with a conference on China and the World Trade Organization. The conference will be from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 15 at the Ritz Charles Conference Center, 9000 W. 137th Street, in Overland Park.

The conference will focus on the business implications of China’s admission to the WTO. The conference will have some hands-on presentations on company market entry and expansion strategies for import, export, investment, and contract manufacturing. It will feature many companies and organizations in the concurrent trade exhibition that can provide participants with products and services designed to enhance China market success.

The Kansas University Small Business Development Center is offering a seminar about cash flow management from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce conference room, 734 Vt. Lori Kravets, a financial consultant, will guide a discussion of topics such as pricing for profitability, forecasting sales, and managing accounts receivable, payables, cash and inventory.
