Finley cancels session, set to start on Tuesday

Cleveland  Chuck Finley was scheduled to speak to the media at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, but at 11:30, Indians public relations director Bart Swain announced that Finley was told by his lawyer not to talk about his wife’s arrest for spousal abuse.

Finley rejoined the club Thursday night in Detroit, and manager Charlie Manuel spoke to him before Friday’s game. “The only thing he wanted to know was when he would be pitching,” Manuel said. “He’ll start on Tuesday. Until then, he’ll throw on the side. That’s about all we talked about. He’s fine, and he’s ready to go.”

Angels put Gil, Percival on 15-day disabled list

Arlington, Texas  Anaheim first baseman Benji Gil and reliever Troy Percival were both put on the 15-day disabled list Friday after the Angels’ 3-1 win against Texas.

Gil sprained his left ankle after fielding a grounder in the first inning of the game. Rangers leadoff hitter Rusty Greer, who slid trying to avoid the tag, slammed his foot hard into Gil’s ankle.

Percival was diagnosed with a strained rib muscle Wednesday, a day after he got his first save of the season. He had been taking anti-inflammatory medication but hadn’t had much relief.

The Angels recalled right-hander Brendan Donnelly and infielder Clay Bellinger from Triple-A Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League.

Cubs put Alou on DL

Chicago  Moises Alou, the Chicago Cubs’ major offseason acquisition, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday before the team’s home opener because of a strained right calf. It is the third straight season Alou has gone to the DL with an injury to his right calf. The Cubs signed him to a $27 million, three-year contract in the offseason to replace another player who had problems with injuries, Rondell White.

Mets acquire closer Strickland from Expos

Atlanta  The New York Mets acquired Montreal closer Scott Strickland on Friday, sending Bruce Chen and two minor leaguers to the Expos.

Strickland, a 25-year-old right-hander, appeared in a career-high 77 games last season. He went 2-6 with nine saves and a 3.21 ERA.

The teams also swapped a pair of minor leaguers. Outfielder Matt Watson and left-hander Philip Seibel came to the Mets, while right-hander Dicky Gonzalez and infielder Luis Figueroa went to the Expos. In addition, Montreal gets a player to be named.

Brewers lose reliever to yet another injury

Milwaukee  The Milwaukee Brewers’ injury-riddled bullpen took another big hit Friday when left-hander Ray King joined closers Curtis Leskanic and Chad Fox on the disabled list. King, one of the NL’s best left-handed setup men for the last two seasons, was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to Wednesday with an inflamed pitching elbow.

Leskanic (shoulder) and Fox (elbow) began the year on the disabled list. King noticed discomfort in his last exhibition start of the spring. He was a workhorse last year after left-hander Valerio De Los Santos was lost for the season after just one appearance.

King’s injury leaves the Brewers with just one left-hander out of the bullpen, newcomer Takahito Nomura.

San Diego catcher hurt

San Francisco  San Diego Padres catcher Wiki Gonzalez went on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a broken bone in his left wrist. Gonzalez was hurt when he fouled off a pitch from Arizona’s Brian Anderson Wednesday. Gonzalez flied out to center on the next pitch, then left the game. He had surgery Thursday and is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks. The Padres recalled catcher Javier Cardona from Triple-A Portland.
