FSHS golf opens with loss to Rockhurst

It wasn’t a win, but Free State High boys golf coach Jack Schreiner knew that would be a difficult feat Wednesday at Alvamar Country Club.

The Firebirds were defeated by perennial power Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst, which finished sixth in last season’s Missouri state tournament, by 43 shots in their season-opening dual.

Rockhurst carded a 319 compared to Free State’s 362.

“We knew we’d have to shoot lights out today if we were going to beat them,” Schreiner said. “It was a good first time out, on probably one of the hardest courses around.”

The opener was especially pleasant for Free State’s Aaron Webber, who led the Firebirds with an 82.

“I was really impressed with how he did today,” Schreiner said. “Obviously, our top four have to shoot well if we’re going to win.”

While Webber was the only Firebird to shoot in the low 80s, Tyler Yeakel and Andy Frye had decent days according to Schreiner, shooting a 90 and 94 respectively. Mike Gisel and Noah Martin each carded a 96, and Matt Baker finished with a 99.

Despite the seemingly respectable rounds, Rockhurst was dominant. Two players shot in the upper 70s and two more finished in the low 80s.

“Yes, I think it’s beneficial to have a tough meet like this early on,” Schreiner said. “It really gives you a measuring stick. But most kids felt they could do much better.”
