A Night on the Town

Those walking in the 600 block of Massachusetts Street may not notice it among the restaurants and coffeehouses, but Liberty Hall Video, 642 Mass., can give a person a different kind of night out on the town.

Once inside there is an enormous and diverse selection of videos and specials, which produces many return customers.

Julie Denning, Lawrence, rents only at this video store.

“Their selection of foreign and art films is great,” she said. “There are non-Hollywood films here. They have the most obscure films. They are not just eye-candy.”

Lisa Miller, Lawrence, rents at minimum of three videos a week.

“I don’t ever watch the same movie twice,” she said. “Potentially this is one of the best film stores in the country. That is not the first time I have said that, too. There is just a good selection of everything, even mainstream video.”

The store has more than 7, 000 titles available for rental, David Nickol, video manager, said.

“They can find things here that aren’t anywhere else,” he said.

Another reason customers return are the special prices. On Monday night, Denning was able to rent two videos for two days and a new release for one day at a total cost of $3.21.

Some of the specials, according to the store’s Web site, www.libertyhall.net/inventory.html, include category of the week  rent one, get one free from the category of the week; Thursday special  rent one, get one free of equal or lesser value; Saturday special  all rentals not due until Monday.

According to Mary Denning, also of Lawrence, the store has the best selection of films.

“Things you can’t find at other places are here. It’s a diverse selection, not so mainstream,” she said. “I do like mainstream, but I come here when I want to get something different, something more independent.”
