Pizza crusts thrown out of a car led Lawrence Police to believe they had the right suspects early Wednesday as they investigated a fight at a downtown bar.
Four men were arrested and taken to the Douglas County Jail for allegedly arguing and fighting with a man outside Fatso's bar, 1016 Mass.
The suspects also allegedly tried to force their way inside the bar by kicking and pounding on the door after they were locked out, Det. Dave Anderson said.
About 1:45 a.m. the suspects allegedly began verbally abusing a man standing outside of Fatso's about the way he dressed. The victim, a 19-year-old Lawrence man, also was struck by at least one of the suspects, Anderson said.
The suspects left but returned a few minutes later. The victim was pulled inside the bar by friends and a bar employee locked the door, Anderson said.
The suspects allegedly kicked and beat on the door before leaving again in a car.
Police were called and spotted a car matching the description of the one driven by the suspects and stopped it in the 200 block of West 11th Street. They also saw pizza crusts thrown out of the car. Pizza can be purchased at Fatso's and some of the suspects had been seen eating pizza there, Anderson said.
Two of the men allegedly fought with officers as they were arrested, Anderson said.
The suspects and their charges: Nathaniel Taylor, 26, interference with a law enforcement officer's duties, assault and criminal damage to property; Anthony Fernandez, 22, criminal damage; Jeremiah Lahm, 21, interference with a law enforcement officer's duties; and Don Gaines, 22, criminal damage. All are from Lawrence.
The suspects were later released and ordered to appear Wednesday morning in Municipal Court. No information was available on those appearances.
