9/19Bankruptcy judge to speak at Baker convocation

September 20, 2001

The state's first female and first black female bankruptcy judge will be the keynote speaker Friday at Baker University's convocation.

Judge Julie A. Robinson of the Kansas District will speak in place of U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, who was scheduled to present the address but will not be able to attend the event because he's dealing with national security issues surrounding last week's terrorist attacks.

Baker is celebrating the civil rights movement with a week of events at its Baldwin campus. The convocation will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Rice Auditorium. It's free and open to the public.

Last week, President Bush nominated Robinson to serve as U.S. District Judge for the Kansas District. Appointed in 1994, Robinson is one of four U.S. bankruptcy judges for the Kansas District.
