Sewing support breakout

September 16, 2001

As a result of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., guild members are asked to bring sewing machines and supplies, as well as red, blue and white or cream-colored fabric to make flag banners patterned after one made by Palmyra Mitchell, a Missouri housewife during the Civil War.

"Making flags is kind of a traditional thing to do. In the Civil War, people did that often," said Karla Menaugh, guild chairwoman. "It's a little bit hard to get flags. They're in short supply."

Members who take part in the effort will make a flag banner to keep for display, Menaugh said. Extra banners may be given to others for display or may be used in some sort of fund-raising effort.

The guild will meet at 7 p.m. Monday and 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mayflower Room in Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.
