Call for restraint

September 16, 2001

To the editor:

Add my voice to those calling for restraint: we must remember those who use terror as a vehicle for their message are extremists. They do not speak for every individual who has similar ethnic or cultural background, and the thousands of innocent people from Middle Eastern countries who live here cannot and should not be held accountable for crimes committed by terrorists. I fear the United States will retaliate in kind, and that will encourage hatred, both here and abroad. I hope we will choose instead to send a message of unity and tolerance. Let us show the world we have learned from crimes we committed against our own citizens in years past. Let us seek peace.
