Here's a quickie injury update a month before the start of the season.

  • Senior guard Brett Ballard suffered a mild sprain in his left knee in a recent pick-up game. Although early indications are that he will be fine, he will undergo an MRI on Monday for precautionary reasons.
  • Freshman guard Jeff Hawkins, who will red-shirt this season, has a bone bruise on his left ankle and will sit out 10 days of pick-up action. No surgical procedures are necessary.
  • Senior walk-on Lewis Harrison had surgery on his big toe last week to remove an unnecessary piece of bone. He will miss 10 days of pick-up games.
  • Junior forward Drew Gooden, who had a back bruise, has returned to pick-up action.
  • Freshman forward Wayne Simien, who continues rehab from offseason shoulder surgery, could be released for pick-up action as soon as next week.

Cote cancels: Bernard Cote, a 6-foot 9 high school senior forward from Montreal, Canada, has canceled his campus trip to Kansas this weekend.

"I'm afraid it's very difficult to leave the airport. Because of the situation it is probably best we cancel and reschedule for next week," Cote's mother, Louise, said Thursday night.

Louise Cote said she and her son are crushed by the U.S. tragedy.

"We feel exactly the same way you do," Cote's mom said. "Whatever happens to the U.S. happens to us. This is really, really sad."

KU's coaches canceled their in-home visit with Austin, Texas, prep forward Brad Buckman on Thursday night. KU coach Roy Williams and Neil Dougherty were unable to catch flights to Austin from Los Angeles and Las Vegas respectively on Thursday.

They were to catch flights today, then regroup for additional in-home visits that have already been scheduled.

"I will stand by my earlier statements. This is all so small, so trivial," KU assistant coach Joe Holladay said of travel and recruiting hassles. "What you do is reschedule. We have tried to take care of business here and on the road both. We've visited with our players twice about the tragedy. There is a lot of concern on campus and rightly so."

Buckman, by the way, has canceled his weekend visit to North Carolina. He's considering KU, Texas, UCLA and North Carolina.

Brown commits: Denham Brown, 6-6, 210 from Toronto, has committed to Connecticut. At one time, Brown had Kansas on his list of schools. He also considered Virginia, Villanova, Boston College and Rutgers.
