Athletes of the week

September 14, 2001

Justin Riley, Lawrence

Class: Senior.

Sport: Cross country.

The week: Riley won the Topeka West Invitational, completing the 5-kilometer race in 16 minutes, 30 seconds, to help Lawrence High capture its second meet of the season.

Comment: "He had an excellent race," LHS coach Dick Reamon said. "He's almost like a coach on the course and understands running so well because it's part of his family background. The week before (at Overland Park Aquinas meet) he tried to force the race and he ran out of gas. On Saturday, he was able to finish what he started."

Jessica Clay, Wellsville

Class: Senior.

Sport: Volleyball.

The week: Clay, a 5-foot-9 senior middle blocker and co-team captain, had 25 kills, 25 stuff blocks and 22 digs to help Wellsville win the Baldwin Invitational. WHS defeated Paola, 15-3, 17-15, to cap a 5-0 run in the tournament.

Comment: "Jessica had a great day at the net," WHS coach John Dowling said. "Her 25 kills, 25 stuff blocks and 22 digs certainly were valuable contributions to our team's success. Jessica seems to save some of her best performances for big matches. She played a very solid match in the championship against Paola."

Andrew Pyle, Eudora

Class: Junior.

Sport: Football.

Positions: running back/safety.

The game: Andrew Pyle, coming off a 209-yard rushing performance in the season opener, had 18 carries for 157 yards, including touchdown runs of 67 and 7 yards, in Eudora's 42-15 romp of Louisburg.

Comment: "He's doing a good job so far," EHS coach Aaron Barnett said. "He does a real good job of reading his blocks. If a play is designed for five yards, he'll get five yards. If a play is designed for 20 yards, he gets 20 yards. He does a good job finding the holes."

Honorable mention: Tonganoxie's Troy Morando compiled 191 yards total offense 110 rushing and 81 passing in a 22-8 win over Leavenworth Immaculata. ... Santa Fe Trail's Shane Miles had three touchdown passes in a 51-8 victory over DeSoto. ... SFT's Ryan Hulings had 127 receiving yards, including two TD catches and kicked five PATs. ... Baldwin's Micah Mason had 21 carries for 115 yards and threw a 68-yard touchdown pass in a 20-15 victory over Wellsville.
