train fatality victim
Attempts continued Monday to identify a man killed when he was run over by a train early Sunday east of Lawrence.
Identification is having to be made by checking the victim's fingerprints, Douglas County Sheriff Rick Trapp said.
"We believe we know who the person is from personal items found at the scene, but we want to make a positive identification," Trapp said.
An Amtrak train carrying 90 passengers out of Kansas City, Mo., was unable to stop in time when train crewmen saw a man lying on the tracks. The incident occurred about 1:45 a.m. Sunday on the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad tracks three-quarters of a mile west of East 1750 Road, the sheriff's department said.
Trapp said he doesn't know why the man was on the tracks. An autopsy has been performed on the body, but results haven't been finalized.
