Louisville, Ky. The world's first recipient of a self-contained artificial heart is out of intensive care.
Robert Tools, 59, was transferred to the hospital's transitional care unit on Thursday, two months after the heart was implanted in his chest, Jewish Hospital said Friday.
"While we continue to have ups and downs, Bob's overall recovery is remarkable," surgeon Dr. Laman Gray said. "Looking at him today, you would never know how gravely ill he was just 10 weeks ago."
Hospital spokeswoman Linda McGinity-Jackson said "it could still be weeks or months" before Tools leaves the hospital.
