Van Franklin Nowak

Services for Van Franklin "Smokey" Nowak, 64, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Barnett Funeral Home, Oskaloosa. Burial will be in McLouth Cemetery.

Mr. Nowak died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo.

He was born Jan. 1, 1937, in McLouth, the son of WIlliam McAlpine and Lillian Lee (Emge) Nowak. He graduated from Lawrence Liberty Memorial High School in 1954.

He was a meteorologist with the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1960 and then later worked in that capacity for several years with the Kansas City Weather Service. He served as a police officer for eight years in Kansas City, Kan., and was a terminal manager for Leonard Brothers Truck Line in Kansas City.

He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo., and a past member of Union Township-City of McLouth Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include two sons, Terry Michael Johnson, Citrus Heights, Calif., and Dennis, Carrollton, Mo.; three daughters, Dawn Vierra, Citrus Heights, Calif., Lori Taylor, Romance, Ark., and Sheri R. Walters, Lawrence; two brothers, Donald and Floyd, both of McLouth; a sister, Ann Dornberger, McLouth; and 15 grandchildren.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
