Random thoughts on racing:

A hot night at Bristol was followed by last weekend's race at Darlington that also left tempers flaring. So what's next? How about a visit to the short track at Richmond, with $1 million on the line for five drivers? If that doesn't keep the suspense running in the Winston Cup series, nothing will. The championship race is becoming a rout with Jeff Gordon cruising to a fourth series title. But there are plenty of drivers who would like a shot at the Top 10 table at the end-of-the-year banquet. ...

... Ward Burton's victory in Sunday's Southern 500 was his third career win and 162nd for Dodge in Winston Cup competition. Prior to Sterling Marlin's victory at Michigan on Aug. 12, Dodge's last triumph was in 1977 with Neil Bonnett at Ontario, Calif. Lee Petty won the first race in a Dodge on Feb. 1, 1953, in West Palm Beach, Fla. Before its return to Winston Cup this season, Dodge last competed in a NASCAR event in 1985 at Pocono. Phil Good finished 30th in that race.
