On Sept. 6, 1901, the Lawrence World reported "A press dispatch bulletined this afternoon says: President McKinley was shot in the Hall of Music twice in the stomach. Just why any man should kill the president is hard to see. He has always been a man particularly free from personal enemies. The entire country will unite in prayer for his speedy recovery."
