VIRGINIA: Shark attacks 10-year-old

A 10-year-old boy was in critical condition Saturday after being attacked by a shark while swimming in the ocean off Sandbridge Beach.

The boy was about 50 feet from shore in 4 feet of water just before 6 p.m. when he was bitten in the right leg, said Ed Brazle, division chief for Virginia Beach's Emergency Medical Services.

A shark about 8-feet long grabbed him, witnesses said.

The boy's father, who was surfing nearby, tried to pry open the shark's mouth, Brazle said. The boy was released when the father hit the shark on the head.

Police did not immediately release the names of the boy or his father.

California: Suspect in slayings says his family was poisoning him

A Ukrainian immigrant who eluded police for 10 days, told detectives he killed his wife, 3-year-old son, aunt, uncle and two 9-year-old cousins because they were "poisoning" him, investigators said Friday.

Sacramento Police said they were still trying to understand what motivated Nikolay Soltys to kill and what he meant when he said the relatives were trying to "poison" him.

Prosecutors plan to announce charges against Soltys on Tuesday, shortly before his arraignment. A spokeswoman said it is too soon to say whether they will seek the death penalty.

Soltys underwent a psychiatric evaluation and is being detained in isolation under 24-hour camera surveillance.
