FIRST QUARTER

4:25 Zach Dyer 1 run. Kansas went three-and-out on its first possession following Andrew Davison's interception. After a missed Southwest Missouri State field goal attempt, KU needed just 3:19 to travel 72 yards on nine plays. The Jayhawks faced just one third down using a mix of run and pass with their one-back, no-huddle offense. Dyer accounted for all but eight yards those came on three carries by Dan Coke by completing both pass attempts and carrying four times for 20 yards. After a QB sneak for three yards on third-and-one from the four-yard line, Dyer capped the drive by diving in behind left guard Bob Smith and center Nick Smith. Johnny Beck kick. (Kansas 7, SMS 0).

SECOND QUARTER

14:06 David McMillan 2 yard fumble return. After both teams traded punts, KU's defense scored on the Bears' first second-quarter possession. As SMS quarterback Austin Moherman dropped back to pass, he was blind-sided by Algie Atkinson at the 10-yard line. McMillan scooped the loose ball on the 2-yard line and fell into the end zone. A delay-of-game penalty pushed back the extra-point attempt. Beck kick. (Kansas 14, SMS 0).

8:58 Brian Long 47-yard FG. SMS went three-and-out, but forced a fumble on KU's ensuing possession. Strong safety Daryl Warren stripped Coke and tackle Derek Rogers recovered. The Bears covered 19 yards on six plays. SMS drove as deep as KU's 29-yard line on an 11-yard pass to tight end Nathan Schurman, but on third-and-two Atkinson stuffed Zach Dechant for a loss of one to force the kick. (Kansas 14, SMS 3).

5:30 Austin Moherman 1 run. On KU's fifth play of the ensuing drive, Dyer was picked off by cornerback Kendrick Shaver, who returned the INT 11 yards to the Kansas 39. The Bears' first play was a 38-yard toss from Moherman to Mark Marcos, who fought off Quincy Roe. After back-to-back fullback dives by Steve Ennis, Moherman snuck in on third-and-inches. Long kick. (Kansas 14, SMS 10).

3:32 Derek Mills 43 pass from Dyer. The Jayhawks rallied once the Bears pulled within four points. After Coke was stopped for no gain, Dyer hit Harrison Hill streaking across the middle and Hill dashed for 20 yards to the KU 45. Dyer connected with Coke for 11, then Coke carried for one, but fumbled out of bounds and was replaced by Harold McClendon. On the ensuing play, Dyer hooked up with Mills for the TD. Dyer hit Mills on a slant at the 28-yard line, and the wideout out-dashed Warren for the score. Beck kick. (Kansas 21, SMS 10).

FOURTH QUARTER

12:58 Beck 43 FG. Making his first attempt as a Jayhawk, KU's freshman from Kansas City drilled the field goal with 10 yards to spare. After neither team could score during an uneventful third quarter, KU's fifth second-half possession took 3:40 to cover 59 yards in 10 plays. First play of the drive was a pretty pass from Dyer to a sliding Termaine Fulton for 31 yards. (Kansas 24, SMS 10).
