Eight Scouts and three adult leaders from Boy Scout Troop 53, chartered to the First Christian Church of Lawrence, spent Aug. 4-12 at the Teton High Adventure Base run by the Great Salt Lake BSA Council in Jackson, Wyo.
The Troop spent one night in the primitive Moulton River Camp and a week at the High Adventure Base on the banks of the Snake River. Scouts participated in white-water rafting, scenic river rafting, canoeing and a high-level C.O.P.E. course. The scouts earned the 50-miler award for covering more than 50 miles on the Snake River.
Free time was spent fly fishing and traveling to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Scouts observed Old Faithful, as well as moose, elk, deer, bald eagles and ospreys.
Those who attended were Brian Bennett, Robert Figueira, Hamilton Lewis, Brian Segebrecht, Bryan Spangler, Justin Stephens, Brian Teefey and Brett Yulich. Scout leaders who attended were Ron Spangler, Steve Segebrecht and Mitch Yulich.
Fifteen Girl Scout and Boy Scout units from the greater Lawrence area participated Aug. 18 in the Second Annual Scouting Extravaganza.
Girl Scout Troops that participated were 660, 673, 736 and 738.
Cub Scout Packs who participated were 3051, 3052, 3057, 3058 and 3059. Boy Scout Troops that participated were Troops 52, 53, 55, 59 and 158. Venturing Crew 2055 also participated.
About 300 people attended the event.
