A Kansas University senior from Paola was killed in a car accident early Friday in Lenexa.
The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the student as Tracy E. Kohl, 21. She was a resident of Sunflower House, 1406 Tenn., a KU spokesman said.
Kohl was driving a 1989 Nissan Maxima about 4 a.m. northbound on Interstate 435 near 95th Street when she turned in front of a semi-tractor trailer, the patrol report said. Kohl's car was struck on the driver's-side door, and she was not wearing a seat belt, the report said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the tractor trailer was identified as Marion D. Morgan, 43, Benton, Ark. She was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
Kohl was majoring in pre-occupational therapy, KU officials said.
KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway noted that this was the second tragedy in less than a week for the university community.
Tuesday night, Georgie Philipose Athial, Olathe, a graduate student in engineering died in what Lawrence Police believe was an accidental drowning at an apartment complex swimming pool. Autopsy results are pending in that incident, police said Friday.
"Our hearts go out to the parents, families and friends of these two fine people who were so young and so full of promise," Hemenway said. "The terrible tragedy of these losses affects us all. On behalf of the entire University of Kansas community, I offer our deepest condolences."
