Winless Navy fires coach after seven games

October 29, 2001

— College coaching changes usually take effect at the end of the season, but the new athletics director at Navy couldn't wait.

Chet Gladchuck, who took over at Navy after stints at Houston and Boston College, fired coach Charlie Weatherbie on Sunday, a day after the Midshipmen (0-7) lost to Toledo (6-1), 21-20.

Weatherbie is the father of Kansas football player Jonas Weatherbie.

Five years ago, when Gladchuck was the AD at Boston College, he almost hired Weatherbie to replace Dan Henning.

In 1996, Weatherbie guided Navy to a 9-3 record. The team went 7-4 the next year. In six-plus seasons at Navy, Weatherbie was 30-45, but the Midshipmen have lost 17 of their last 18.

Weatherbie's contract runs through January 2006, and there has been some speculation of a buyout clause. If all five remaining years are guaranteed, he would be due about $1 million.

Defensive coordinator Rick Lantz was appointed interim coach.
