Bodies of missing boaters recovered from reservoir

Norton The bodies of two men missing since their boat capsized two weeks ago have been recovered from the Keith Sebelius Reservoir in this northwestern Kansas town.

The body of Somnuck Amphonephong, 54, was found Saturday afternoon, and his son, Kittikone Xaiyarath, 23, was pulled from the lake Thursday, said Norton County Sheriff Troy Thomson.

The bodies were both found in the Cement Cove area of the reservoir.

A third man, Sombath Phanalith, 41, also of Garden City, was with Xaiyarath and Amphonephong at Sebelius Reservoir that weekend. His body was recovered two days after the men were last seen.

Authorities continue to investigate. But it is believed gusty winds caused the boat to capsize when the men drowned Oct. 13.

Brush fire extinguished

A grass and brush fire Sunday afternoon burned south of Clinton Lake in the area of the Rock Haven horse trail.

The fire, near the corner of 1000 E. 600 Road, was spotted just after 2 p.m. Sunday, said Lt. Kathy Tate of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Volunteer firefighters from Clinton and Clarion Springs townships responded to the fire, which was extinguished by late afternoon. Lawrence Fire and Medical were called in as standby. There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is unknown.
