James Nicolay

— He was born July 18, 1917, on the family farm north of Dragoon River, the son of Lloyd and Bertha (King) Nicolay. He graduated from Lyndon High School and owned and operated the Filling Station and Corner Grocery north of Baldwin Junction for 15 years, then worked as a driver's license examiner for the Department of Revenue for 14 years.

Mr. Nicolay was a member of the Lyndon United Methodist Church and the Euclid Lodge #101 A.F. & A.M. of Lyndon, where he was a past master and 50-year member.

He married Betty Burd on Oct. 12, 1940, in Osage City. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Ed, Baldwin; two daughters, Mary Louise Anderson, Carbondale, and Suzi Gottstein, Baldwin; a brother, Charles, Topeka; a sister, Mary Francis Ryan, Solon, Iowa; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

A great-granddaughter, Britni Proctor, died in 1997.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Feltner Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Assn., sent in care of the mortuary, Box 160, Lyndon, 66451.
