Why do I have to pay a toll to drive on the Kansas Turnpike when I pay taxes that are supposed to go toward road maintenance on Kansas Highways?

No tax money is used for operation of the Turnpike. In addition, the Kansas Turnpike

Authority does not have the authority to levy any tax, nor does it receive any tax revenue generated through sales at Turnpike service areas.

According to its 2000 annual report, the Turnpike Authority was created by the Kansas Legislature in 1953 as a public corporation with power to construct, operate and maintain turnpike projects and to issue revenue bonds for any of its corporate purposes, payable solely from the tolls and revenue pledged for their payment.
