Biffle snares fifth win

— Greg Biffle came back from nearly two laps down to earn his fifth Busch Series victory of the season Saturday in the Outback Steakhouse 200 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Biffle, the top rookie in the stock car series and a former NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion, came up with his second win on the mile oval in two days. He also won the truck race Friday.

A cut right front tire on lap 69 of the 200-lap race left Biffle more than a lap behind the leaders in 37th place, but he was able to charge through the field and get back on the lead lap during a caution period after Larry Foyt crashed on lap 112.

"I was nearly two laps down to the leader after driving down pit road," Biffle said. "When you have a tire go down like that, it can knock the right front fender right off and then your day is done.

"I had to use a little discipline to slow down below the speed limit on pit road. But going slower there probably saved the race for me."

Once Biffle's Ford took the lead on lap 124, he stayed there, fighting off series leader Kevin Harvick and then defending series champion Jeff Green, who is second in the points.

Harvick, playing it safe to protect his points lead, let Green drive past on lap 192.

"I didn't want to have him move me out of the way," said Harvick, who lost five points to Green and now leads by 198 after finishing third. He could clinch the title next Saturday in Rockingham, N.C., and will win it simply by finishing 25th or better in the final two events.

After only one caution flag in each of the first two Busch races in Phoenix, this one had seven cautions.

Biffle, fighting a loose car and seeing Green closing on him, nearly spun in the second turn on a restart on lap 186. He hung on to the top spot, though, and was pulling away when Geoffrey Bodine was bumped by another car and slammed into the wall on lap 193.

NASCAR officials put out a red flag to stop the cars long enough to allow safety workers to clear the track.

The final restart came on lap 198, with Biffle leaving Green far behind. It appeared that Biffle came up to speed well before the line where the leader is supposed to resume racing.
