KU jazz musicians to present concert

Two KU jazz groups will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lied Center.

Keith Johnson conducts the four-piece KU Jazz Combo I, selecting from the work of Dave Douglas, Wayne Shorter, Keith Johnson and Chris Shaw.

Under the direction of Dan Gailey, the KU Jazz Singers will perform works by Miles Davis, Rogers and Hammerstein, John Coltrane, Henry Mancini, Kerry Marsh and Billie Holiday. The six-student ensemble is accompanied by a four-piece rhythm section.

Admission is $7 general admission and $5 for students and senior citizens.

Baldwin couple to show prints

Baldwin "The Fine Art of Printmaking," selections from the collection of John and Evonne English of Baldwin, will be shown Thursday through Nov. 20 at the Holt-Russell Gallery In Parmenter Hall at Baker University.

John English will give a gallery talk at 2 p.m. Nov. 4. A reception will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 16.

Dance concert geared toward the younger set

The Prairie Wind Dancers will present a concert for youth at 2 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 200 W. Ninth St.

Some of the works on the program are from a larger work titled "Prairie." The works use costumes designed in 1941 by John Steuart Curry. The costumes are created by Ione Unruh, with masks by Robert Faust.

The audience will have a chance to perform with the dancers in "About You," an improvisation based on artwork created by audience members as they arrive.

The Prairie Wind Dancers Apprentice Company will perform a new work by Kimber Andrews, a member of the Prairie Wind Dancers. The piece, "Superheroes," involves six dancers, each of whom takes on superhero qualities.

Prairie Wind Dancer Sarah Grunwaldt will perform "The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from the ballet "The Nutcracker."

Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for youths and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the door.

Kansas Authors Club honors three writers

Three Lawrence writers placed in the annual Kansas Authors Club writing competition. David Lignall, Jean Jackson and Anne Haehl were recognized during the group's annual convention Oct. 6-7 in Wichita.

This year the Kansas Authors Club sent 32 books, written and published by past and current club members, to the Kenneth Spencer Research Library at Kansas University.
