Busch driver Keller has shot at $1 million contribution

October 27, 2001

— Jason Keller would love to win today's Busch Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, and not just because he needs a victory.

Keller, third in the season points race heading into the Outback Steakhouse 150 on the one-mile oval, has the opportunity to make a $1 million contribution to a cause that is important to him.

Should Keller win the race, Yoplait Yogurt will donate that amount to the Susan G. Komen Foundation on behalf of Keller's sponsor, Albertson's. The Komen Foundation is a leading organization in the fight against breast cancer, and October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

"I have a mother-in-law who is a breast cancer survivor of 16 years, so it's something that is near and dear to my heart," Keller said. "I've done a lot of charity events over the years. I've had my own golf tournament and things over the last five to six years, and to be able to donate this kind of money, in this kind of magnitude, in one shot is really an honor."

If he is to win his second race of the season and the sixth of his career, Keller will have to do it from 24th on the 43-car grid.

"We put a lot of emphasis on this race," he said. "The car was just off and we got to the bottom of it this morning.

"We were the fastest in happy hour and the fastest on consistent runs. ... Hopefully, we can pull this thing off."

Keller was asked if that $1 million will be on his mind if he's running near the lead late in the race.

"It better be on the mind of the guy that's in front of me because it's not going to be me that's going to be hurting, it will be the guy in front of me," he said.
