Address: 1600 Haskell Ave., Suite 197
Contact person: Eve Cofer, coordinator
It's not too early for ECKAN to start thinking about the holidays, and plenty of volunteers and donations are needed for this season, coordinator Eve Cofer said.
Each year, ECKAN and several other agencies run the Holiday Bureau, which prepares holiday boxes that will be distributed to individuals and families registered with the agencies.
Coming up is a food, clothing and toy drive today through Nov. 3 at Crown Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, 3400 S. Iowa. Cofer said volunteers are needed today and Nov. 3 to load and unload items and on Nov. 18 to pack and sort the items.
"Last year, (ECKAN) helped 171 families at Thanksgiving and 414 families at Christmas," she said.
Cofer said people also can help by participating in the holiday Adopt-a-Family program or by donating canned food, toys, clothing, cash or gift certificates.
ECKAN provides a number of services to low-income families in Anderson, Coffey, Douglas, Franklin, Lyon, Miami and Osage counties.
The agency offers transportation, medicine, weatherization, utility, rent, appliance and clothing assistance; helps provide school supplies to needy children; runs a food pantry and distributes commodities; provides outreach to the homebound; works with the National Youth Sports Program at Kansas University and the Vita Program; provides tutoring and conducts workshops on nutrition and other health-related topics; and other services.
Last week's results
