Area Roundup: Santa Fe Trail clinches Class 4A state playoff berth

— Santa Fe Trail clinched a Class 4A state playoff berth with 43-8 victory over Council Grove on Friday night.

Four of the Chargers' six touchdowns went for more than 25 yards.

"It was a game of big plays," SFT coach Bob Von Stein said, "not a lot of big drives."

Santa Fe Trail (5-3, 2-0) will travel to Burlington on Thursday.

Ottawa The Cyclones rebounded from last week's 48-21 loss to Santa Fe Trail to shut out Burlington behind Jason Houston's 165 yards and three touchdowns.

"It was just a much better performance compared to the game we played against Santa Fe Trail last Friday night," OHS coach Pat Boeh said. "It was a total team performance and everyone contributed to a great team win."

Gabe Sheffield was 5-of-5 passing for 80 yards and two touchdowns, both to Lee Baldwin. Ottawa (4-4 overall, 1-1 district) gained 438 yards of total offense, compared to Burlington's 34.

The Cyclones will face Council Grove on Thursday night.

Baldwin The Bulldogs outgained Louisburg by more than 300 yards and took advantage of two fumbles in Friday's victory.

Baldwin (5-3, 1-1) scored after both Louisburg fumbles. Tyler Inzer rushed for 181 yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown, and Micah Mason carried 23 times for 151 yards and three touchdowns.

Baldwin will travel to Spring Hill on Thursday to finish out the regular season.

Perry Holton ran for 435 yards, more than the Kaws' entire offensive output.

Clifton Henderson led Perry-Lecompton with 136 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, and Jared Swafford rushed for 122 yards and a score on 13 carries.

Holton's Josh King ran 11 times for 142 yards and a touchdown, and Andrew Hinman rushed for 111 yards and two scores.

The Kaws (4-4, 0-2) will travel to Meriden to face Jefferson West on Thursday.

McLouth The Bulldogs dropped to 1-7 overall with Friday's loss.

"I was disappointed," McLouth coach Ballard Patterson said. "I don't feel like we came ready to play. We obviously could have played a lot better than we did. They weren't 58 points better than us. But we'll bounce back and play better next week."

McLouth will finish its season at Lyndon on Thursday.

Leavenworth Immaculata 28, Oskaloosa 6

Oskaloosa Immaculata scored a touchdown in all four quarters to Oskaloosa, spoiling the Bears' bid to return to the Class 3A state playoffs. The Bears dropped to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in district.
