Franklin County accident killed four update

October 7, 2001

A 4-year-old boy involved in a two-vehicle accident south of Ottawa remained in critical condition Saturday night at a Kansas City, Mo., hospital.

Austin McGowen, Williamsburg, was the only survivor and is at Children's Mercy Hospital. His father, Joshua Adams, 22, Williamsburg, and his sister, Katlyn Adams, 1, Williamsburg, were killed in the accident that occurred at about 8:18 p.m. Friday 1 mile east of Williamsburg.

Joshua Adams was westbound on Old Highway 50 in a 1998 Plymouth when it was struck on the driver's side by a 1989 Honda driven by Ervin Cook, 30, Ottawa. Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Keith Hudson said the evidence suggests that Cook failed to stop at a stop sign on Colorado Road and Highway 50.

Hudson said the Plymouth entered the north side of the ditch where it struck a fence pole, flipped over and caught on fire. Cook and his passenger, Richard Bishop, 27, Princeton, also died at the scene.

Hudson said the KHP is investigating whether alcohol was involved.
