To the editor:
As a downtown merchant, I follow parking developments with interest. Therefore, I read the recent article regarding bicycle parking and would like to offer a suggestion to the city commission.
Why stop at metered bicycle parking as proposed by the Bicycle Advisory Commission? City revenues would be greatly enriched with a system of checkpoints surrounding downtown! Perhaps an appropriate charge would be $1 per shopper for a four-hour period; fines would, of course, apply to those who overstay. (Over-shop?) This plan would make certain that all visitors to the downtown contribute to Lawrence's infrastructure, particularly those who walk here from their homes. As things stand, walkers appear to have an unfair advantage over drivers and (soon?) cyclists.
