Lawrence artists picked for Salina exhibit

Two Lawrence artists have been selected for the Salina Art Center Annual Exhibition Nov. 18-Jan. 13 at the Salina Art Center, 242 S. Santa Fe Ave.

The artists are Traci Tullius and Cobi Newton.

The exhibit features sculpture, photography, painting, video, screenprints and quilts from Kansas, Missouri, Texas and Colorado.

Juror was David Henry, head of education at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Lechliter, other poets to read their works

A poetry reading featuring Lawrence poets will be from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at The Raven Bookstore, 6 E. Seventh St.

Gary Lechliter will read from his new book, "Under the Fool Moon," published by Coal City Review. Lechliter is the recipient of the 1999 Langston Hughes Award for poetry.

Other participating poets are Sarah Ruhlen and Nedra Rogers. Ruhlen is the co-founder of Medusa, a local writers' group that sponsors readings.

The event is free and open to the public.

Poster contest centers on golf

Hutchinson The 2002 U.S. Women's Open is seeking entries for its Catch the Spirit poster contest. The championship will be in July at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson.

The contest is divided into three categories: grades 5-6, grades 7-8 and grades 9-12. One winner will be chosen from each category and then will advance to the grand-prize competition.

The grand-prize winner and his or her parents will receive season passes, access to the Championship Club and Skybox on July 7 and have the poster reproduced and displayed in the months leading up to the golf championship.

The theme of the posters should represent and incorporate the Catch the Spirit program of the U.S. Golf Assn., Prairie Dunes Country Club, the 2002 U.S. Women's Open Championship, and the Fourth of July.

Entry forms are available at Kwik shops. Deadline for entries is Jan. 10.
