Irene Murphy

— Services for Irene Murphy, 95, Baldwin, will be at 10 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church, Baldwin. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Kingman Cemetery.

Ms. Murphy died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at Baldwin Care Center.

She was born April 24, 1906, in Kingman, the daughter of Oren and Etta (Livingston) Murphy. She graduated from Kingman High School in 1924. She graduated from Southwestern College, Winfield, in 1927 with a degree in English literature. She received her master's degree in 1929 and her doctorate degree in 1931 in English literature from Kansas University.

Ms. Murphy taught school at Independence High School; National College, Kansas City, Kan.; and Women's College, Oklahoma. She also taught English at the School of Engineering at KU. In 1957, she began work at Baker University, where she was head of the English department. She retired in 1972.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Baldwin, where she was church historian; United Methodist Women; Tuesday Reading Club; P.E.O.; American Association of University Women, and Business and Professional Women.

In 1999, Ms. Murphy was inducted into Baker University's Hall of Fame for "Outstanding Teacher."

Survivors include two cousins.

The family suggests memorials to Baker University or First United Methodist Church, sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 64, Baldwin 66006.
