Services for James David "J.D." Austin, 60, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Austin died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Colmery-O'Neil Veterans Administration Medical Center, Topeka.
He was born April 3, 1941, in St. Louis, the son of Lawrence Atwell and Ethel F. (Smith) Austin. He attended high school in Bartlesville, Okla., and graduated from Dunbar High School, Lubbock, Tex.
Mr. Austin served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, and had worked at Sunflower Ammunition Plant and as a medic for Lawrence Ambulance Service. He was a member of Menace Society and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lawrence. He had played with the Harlem Globetrotters.
Survivors include five sons, Brian, Los Angeles, and Yusaf Ali, Kareem Abdul, Amallah and Ahmad Rahman, all of Lawrence; a daughter, Katanna Yvonne Stennis, Lawrence; his father, Lawrence, Lawrence; five sisters, Margaret J. George, Bartlesville, Okla., Judy Johnson, Portland, Ore., Dimeta V. Webb, Lincoln, Neb., and Verna M. Austin-Woods and Katrina K. Sales, both of Lawrence; four brothers, Lawrence A. Jr., Hawaii, Markum B., Lawrence, Cedric T., Katy, Tex., and Kimbrough V., Houston; and eight grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to American Cancer Society, and they may be sent in care of the funeral home.
