Fort Lauderdale, Fla. A woman was shot to death Tuesday moments after dropping off her two daughters at a day-care center. One of her ex-boyfriends was charged with murder, authorities said.
Laberta Bedford, 19, had just left her daughters, ages 2 and 3, at the Cradle Nursery and was going back to her car with her son when she was shot in the back several times, Det. Mike Reed said. The boy, 5, was shaken but unhurt.
Police charged Clifford Jackson, who investigators said was once romantically involved with Bedford, with first-degree murder.
Police said Jackson fled the scene as pedestrians and those inside the day care center converged on Bedford. He was found two hours later in an apartment three blocks away from the day-care center.
The day-care center closed for the day and parents were called to pick up their children.
Reed said Bedford's children were released to relatives.
