The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Douglas County until 7 p.m. Thursday.
Dime-sized and quarter-sized hail fell for about five minutes,, starting about 2:05 p.m. Thursday, in southwest Lawrence. There were also reports of hail in downtown Lawrence.
Hail up to two inches in diameter, thunderstorm wind gusts of up to 60 mph and dangerous lightning are possible in the watch area, which is along and 85 miles north and south of a line from 20 miles south of Leavenworth to 40 miles north of Columbia,, Mo.
The forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of rain this afternoon, with thunderstorms likely. The thunderstorms could be severe, with heavy downpours in some areas.
Showers and thunderstorms are also likely Thursday night, with cooler temperatures and a low around 60. The chance for rain tonight is 60 percent.
