Kansas Press Women awards honor area journalists

A Lawrence Journal-World editor is the recipient of the 2001 Kansas Press Women's Sweepstakes Award.

Jan Biles, features-arts editor, was honored Saturday night at the annual KPW convention in Hutchinson after receiving nine first-place awards in the organization's annual communications contest.

Biles won first-place certificates in the following categories: feature writing; arts and entertainment writing; historical writing; review writing; health/science writing; editing of lifestyle/entertainment pages; editing of section for The Mag; editing of infrequent section of the KU Arts section; and page layout. She also won a second-place award in editing of lifestyle/entertainment pages.

Ann Gardner, Journal-World editorial page editor, won first- and second-place awards in editorial writing.

Carol Francis, owner of Carol Francis Creative Communications, 729 1/2 Mass., won first- and second-place awards in speech writing.

Nora Cleland, a Baldwin free-lancer, placed first and second in agriculture/agribusiness writing, and first and second for news writing for general or specialized publications.

Lou Ann Thomas, Oskaloosa, was first runner-up. She won seven first-place and two honorable-mention awards for her writing. She is a free-lance writer.

All first-place entries will advance to the National Federation of Press Women's communication contest.
