Olathe Free State High's girls soccer team overcame a one-goal deficit, but couldn't conquer a two-goal lead in losing to Olathe East, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Olathe District Activities Center.
Olathe East (11-1-1) took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes in, before the Firebirds (7-6) forged a tie on a goal by April Del Campo off an assist from Kristin Bock. The Hawks grabbed a 2-1 edge five minutes into the second half and scored again 10 minutes later.
Free State closed the scoring on a free kick by Kelsey Mellard with about 15 minutes left.
"Our defense played outstanding," FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said. "They're an incredible team. For us to be able to battle and compete for 80 minutes shows the steps we're making in our program. They're an outstanding team with a legitimate chance to win the state championship."
Free State travels to Kansas City Harmon today for its fifth game in seven days.
