Four players leave Texas Tech

March 31, 2001

— One week after being hired, Texas Tech coach Bob Knight kicked three players off the team on Friday for "some violation of team rules" and the school granted a fourth player his release.

Dismissed from the team were Jamal Brown, the Red Raiders' starting guard who averaged 10.6 points per game, Rodney Bass and Brannon Hayes, a pair of freshmen reserves.

Hayes said Knight called the three players into his office earlier this week, and the meeting resulted in a misunderstanding.

"All I know is I was just not wanted here next year," Hayes said. "Me and Rodney are disappointed in things, but we are young, very talented and have a desire to play basketball."

Brown, Bass and Hayes will keep their scholarships. Ronald Hobbs, a backup guard who averaged 5.5 points per game, asked for and was given his release.

Hobbs said he planned to leave before former coach James Dickey was fired.
