— Lawrence High blanked Shawnee Mission South in the opener before being blanked in the nightcap of its season-opening softball doubleheader Thursday at the Johnson County Girls Athletics Assn. diamonds.

LHS won the first game, 6-0, behind a four-hitter from junior pitcher Ashley Burnett, bult lost the second game, 1-0, when the Raiders scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

"I think we played really well and did a lot of good things, especially from our young kids," LHS coach Reenie Stogsdill said. "We're disappointed to get out with a split and we felt we should have won two games. We were aggressive in the first game with our bats, and the second game we couldn't get anything going."

In the first game, LHS erupted for four runs in the top of the second. Freshman shortstop Jenni Morrell's two-run double keyed the outburst.

Jennifer Narcomey, Burnett, Courtney Taulbert and Megan Cooper each had two hits apiece to lead the Lions in the first game.

Burnett, playing with a torn left ACL, was the winning pitcher in the first game and took the loss in relief in the second game. The Raiders scored the winning run on a hit to left field with the bases loaded.

"She looked strong," Stogsdill said of Burnett. "She threw a lot of pitches. We're going to have to get used to that. She'll get stronger as the season goes on."

Junior Micaela Hill started on the mound for LHS in the second game. She struck out three batters and allowed two hits in four shutout innings.

"Micaela throws a really good drop ball and I think she and Ashley complement each other," Stogsdill said. "We felt they might catch up with Micaela and we planned on making the change."
