Glass mosaics missing from coffee shop wall
A Lawrence artist is seeking his two Italian glass mosaics, which apparently were stolen from a downtown Lawrence coffee shop.
Two glass pieces, on display at La Prima Tazza, 638 Mass., were noticed missing Wednesday, said David Loewenstein, above, the artist who made them. He has a drawing from which the missing glass mosaics were made.
Loewenstein, pictured with a sketch that the mosaics were based on, had been displaying his artwork since late February at the coffee shop. The two pieces were seen Wednesday morning but weren't there the next day, he said.
Police have been informed about the apparent theft. It didn't appear there was a break-in at the coffee house, Loewenstein said.
Anyone with information about the missing sculptures was asked to call police at 832-7650 or La Prima Tazza at 832-2233.
Benefit
Parade committee presents $25,000 to Ballard Center
St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee members made the Ballard Community Center see green Thursday.
The committee presented $25,000 to the center the most in the group's 14 years of raising money for children's organizations.
Fund-raisers include a celebrity and sports memorabilia auction, Shamrock Shuffle 5K run, a dart tournament and the March 17 parade. The committee raises money for different charities related to children each year.
The money will help the Ballard Center become accredited with the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Purchases will include $15,000 in playground equipment and rubber matting to go under it.
"It's truly amazing it's all volunteers that do this, and the amount of work that goes into it is incredible," said Chip Blaser, development director at the Ballard Center. "We're thankful to be involved in the program this year."
Crime
Band members robbed of their equipment
Two band members who had been performing at a downtown Lawrence nightclub were robbed of band equipment early Thursday, police said.
Two men, 29 and 30 years old, were walking from The Bottleneck, 737 N.H., when they were approached by five men in the 200 block of East Eighth Street, police said. Though no weapon was displayed, one of the suspects motioned toward his waist indicating he had a weapon, police said.
The men told the two band members to drop their equipment, which included a luggage case, a guitar pedal and two 20-foot electrical extension cords. The suspects then made off with the property, police said.
Seminar
Well-plugging demonstration scheduled for Saturday
A seminar on well-plugging will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Colyer School, located at the intersection of North 600 and East 800 roads.
Groundwater use requires wells and many test holes, and there are unused or abandoned wells located in fields, farmsteads, industrial sites and other urban areas such as school yards, say representatives of the Douglas County Farm Bureau and the Douglas County Conservation District.
Many of those holes are not properly plugged. The wells are sources of contamination of groundwater and physical hazards to animals and people, especially children, they said.
A hole on the school grounds will be plugged during a demonstration.
