To the editor:
People of Lawrence, AWAKE! How much longer will you stand by and watch our downtown area turn into just another "hang out" where guns and knives prevail? Another shooting this week at the Granada! How inviting this must sound to visitors! If the downtown area is to remain productive and attract shoppers (which translates to INCOME) then the time has come to swiflty end the bars, dives and trouble spots like the Granada.
Downtown Lawrence has become a disgrace, an embarrassment! It's filthy and dirty. Shopkeepers never clean their walks in front of their stores anymore. Leaves, dirty cigarette butts fill the corners of the stores and around the doors. Broken bottles, beer cans, trash. I have walked many times throughout the year and especially in the summertime and for a two-block area from the Granada north and south you must step around and over dog feces! Shopkeepers don't even bother hosing down the sidewalks anymore.
Don't we have something to be proud of, to show visitors who have heard so much about the uniqueness of downtown Lawrence. What a JOKE! Bring your own shovel and broom! I for one am ashamed of our downtown and concerned for the safety of families who still come out to stroll and push their little ones in strollers. The safety of these famililes and all the LOCAL people who live and support Lawrence ALL YEAR LONG SHOULD COME FIRST!
What has happened to Lawrence's pride and BACKBONE? Isn't it time for "those in charge of downtown" to STAND UP and TAKE CHARGE?
Claire Kreighbaum,
Lawrence
