Authorities seized marijuana and cocaine at a Lawrence motel after finding two juveniles inside a room with the drugs, Lawrence Police said Wednesday.
Officers responded Friday evening to the Virginia Inn, 2903 W. Sixth St., on reports of juveniles inside one of the rooms without adult supervision, police said. Upon arrival, police said, they found 71.5 grams of marijuana and 2.7 grams of cocaine in the room.
The juveniles -- a 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy -- weren't arrested but were released to the custody of their parents because it wasn't clear whether the drugs actually had been in the possession of the two juveniles, police said.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters
eyes $100,000 in fund-raiser
Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Douglas County has revamped its annual Bowl for Kids' Sake fund-raiser in hopes of raising $100,000.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America has chosen Douglas County as one of five national pilot programs to test a revamped campaign. The revised Bowl for Kids' Sake will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 7 at Royal Crest Lanes, Ninth and Iowa streets.
In the new program, the agency asks businesses and organizations to commit a set number of teams to the event. Each team will solicit pledges and bowl, but pledges will be billed by the agency rather than by the participants, as formerly done.
In its past 10 years, Bowl for Kids' Sake has not raised more than $18,000 in any one year for the Douglas County group. The Sedgwick County Big Brothers/Big Sisters group, which Douglas County is modeling, traditionally reaps more than $1 million annually with its fund-raiser.

They also will perform the skit at the state competition May 5 in Abilene for the National History Day contest. The girls are Rachel Buck, Sarah Bellows-Blakely, Asona Lui and Shruti Challa.
Following the performance, a Lawrence family, dressed in Civil War-era clothes, will give a vocal and instrumental performance. The family is Jeff and Christine Reinhard and their son, Christopher, and daughter, Melissa. Both events are free and open to the public.
