Beans are the means

Got a pint-size brother or sister and trying to figure out what to do with the crying, drooling being?

Well, try this simple bean game that's perfect for toddlers. (Babies are too small for this kind of fun, so let them stick with baby toys.)

All you need is a large, clear plastic container (like the ones your mom stores sweaters in), various sizes of smaller clear plastic cups, jars, scoops and bottles, and enough dried kidney beans to fill the large container to a depth of 3 or 4 inches.

Put the container with the beans and the cups, jars, scoops and bottles on a small table or a blanket on the floor. Invite your little bro to play.

He can run his fingers through the beans, feel their cool smoothness, take a handful and let them fall back into the container.

Preschoolers can fill jar after jar, pouring from one cup into another, seeing how many scoops it takes to fill the smallest cup, the middle size, the biggest.

There is no one right way to play with the beans; the only rule is that the beans must stay in the container!
