A broken sewer main on Kansas University's West Campus prompted issuance of a health advisory by the Law-rence-Douglas County Health Department.

The break occurred about 3 p.m. Friday in an 18-inch line on the campus, about half a mile south of Orchard's golf course on West 15th Street.

Raw sewage was leaking from the line into a creek that is a tributary of Yankee Tank Creek. The Health Department advises people and their pets to have no contact with the creek area from the break south to the Wakarusa River.

Contamination from the break and the creek water could cause hepatitis, typhoid and other diseases, Health Department Administrator Kay Kent said.

"If anybody gets the water on them, they should wash with soap thoroughly," Kent said. "Pets can get into the water and then track it through the house."
