One accident led to three more Tuesday morning east of Lawrence, causing traffic delays but only minor injuries.

The first accident occurred about 6 a.m. when a 19-year-old Lawrence man fell asleep as he drove west on Kansas Highway 10. Edwin Mueller drifted left across the westbound lanes of traffic and into the median, where his 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck rolled once and came to rest on its driver's-side door, Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Mark Drennan said.

Mueller, who had been wearing his seat belt, suffered minor scrapes and cuts and was treated and released at the scene, Drennan said. Mueller's vehicle was towed away.

Subsequent accidents occurred as a result of authorities caring for Mueller and clearing the scene, Drennan said. Troopers had to block off the left lane of eastbound traffic, slowing vehicles to a crawl and backing them up to Edgerton Road.

Five vehicles became involved in two rear-end collisions caused by the traffic congestion, Drennan said. None of those involved were injured, but two Lawrence residents and one Perry resident were shaken up when their vehicles were damaged by a dump truck.

The dump truck, driven by a Eudora man, collided with one vehicle after switching lanes. Unable to stop for the two vehicles, the truck struck the rear of the Perry resident's vehicle, which was then pushed into the rear of the third vehicle, Drennan said.

The names of those involved in the subsequent accidents were unavailable late Tuesday.

All accidents were cleared from the roadway and normal traffic resumed later Tuesday morning.
