Matthews, who led the FSHS girls soccer team with 10 goals last season en route to receiving All-Sunflower League honorable mention, had a goal and an assist in the Firebirds' season-opening 2-1 victory Tuesday at Shawnee Heights.
"I think we're fortunate this year," FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said, "in that we have a lot of creative players doing things offensively. Morgan is a key part of that. Michelle Garcia and Meridith Mayo and at midfield Kristin Bock and Katy Vormehr, all those players provide us with a potential threat on the offensive end.
"Tonight was probably as creative as I've seen us play."
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Matthews scored in the 48th minute off a pass from Mayo on a play that was started by Bock. Seven minutes later, Garcia scored the game-winner off a through ball from Matthews.
"Obviously we want to get the season off with a good start," Pendleton said. "Winning is a good feeling right now. They've worked hard for a long period of time. I think they understand, more important than the win, we played really well. The team felt good about that. But there's a lot of things we need to work on overall."
The Firebirds, who outshot the Thunderbirds 30-5, travel to Manhattan on Saturday.
