The Firebirds, who opened their season with the first of 12 single games to go with four doubleheaders, were no-hit by the No. 7-ranked Eagles in suffering a 19-0, 4 1/2-inning shellacking.
"The score is not indicative of the game," FSHS coach Mike Hill said. "This is a team that's not 19 runs better than us, though they certainly were today."
Olathe North (3-0) scored a run in the first inning and three in the second before the roof caved in on Free State with a five-run third and a 10-run fourth. The Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate in the fatal fourth.
"We gave up four unearned runs in the first couple innings and made some mistakes in the fourth," Hill said of the Firebirds, who finished with four errors. "They were a good team and made us pay for our mistakes."
FSHS junior Eric Peterson (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing six earned runs on nine hits in two innings.
The Firebirds had just four baserunners.
"We did a lot of things characteristic of a team young and inexperienced," Hill said. "It snowballed. We'll try to come back and go to work tomorrow."
Free State's home opener is against Blue Valley North at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at the FSHS field.
