In 1959, the state's commission approved the 200-acre lake, 12 miles southeast of Lawrence. A year later, the Kansas Legislature allocated $343,000 to finance the project.
The lake opened in 1966 and was stocked with largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill.
Today, Larry Lentz, the lake's conservation worker, said people mainly can catch crappie, bass, bluegill and channel catfish, but there are some flathead catfish. He said the lake is restocked with bass and channel catfish about every year.
