To the editor:
Thursday, there is a candidates forum at the city library auditorium. Here is where you question the candidates in order to find out who has a growth plan which will slow personal property tax growth or who will proceed on with business as usual (managed growth/urban sprawl).
Also would it be fair for every commissioner to serve a term as mayor of our city or let a group of like thinkers control their own agenda through the position of mayor?
Do tax abatements affect school funding? Who will support law enforcement in the neighborhoods? Should the school board and the city commissioners work more closely together in order to provide a practical approach to schools and staffing? Our state and federal representatives like across the board tax cuts which does affect school funding how will we provide funding?
These are a few of the concerns that I have received. However, questions will be fielded from the audience. The forum begins at 6:30 p.m. School board and city commission candidates will be present as well as the media. This forum is sponsored by the Brookcreek, East Lawrence, Oread and Pinckney neighborhood associations, Friends of Douglas County and the Kansas University Student Senate. Do come and ask a question of your choice.
Richard Heckler,
Lawrence
